Some of the photographs are taken from inside what remains of the artist’s apartment, while others look outward from the ruins towards the surrounding city. Through these personal and restricted viewpoints, Salem records damaged buildings, streets, temporary shelters and fragments of everyday life among the ruins.

A short video accompanies the series, showing Salem entering what remains of his apartment. Personal belongings, furniture, clothing and household objects appear among the rubble, connecting the destruction of the city with the destruction of a private world.

These are not photographs of destruction seen from a distance. They are images made from within it — from a place that was once a home, and from a city that was once familiar.

Remains of a Life is therefore not only a record of destruction, but also a record of what remains: fragments of a home, a neighbourhood and an ordinary life that persist amid the devastation.
